MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

The Deland YMCA Tri Fest sprint triathlon was held on May 4, 2008. Tigershark members made a good showing with Steve Bodnaruk 2nd in age group, 3rd overall; Chad Pilster 3rd in age group, 4th overall; Paul Finn 1st in age group, 7th overall; Rob Wallace 1st in age group, 9th overall.

Congratulations to all the TIGERSHARK TEAM members who completed the 25th running of St. Anthonys's Triathlon in St. Pete on April 27, 2008. The olympic distance race drew 4,800 competitors this year and required over two hours of wave starts to get all athletes on the course. The morning winds caused a steady chop on the swim course but died off by 10am. Athletes in later waves dealt with increasing heat on the run course, however, the air temps were slightly lower than years past. MALLORY DUNN had the best race of the group, finishing 5th in the Elite Amateur division and 167th overall with a time of 2h and 13m. Other finishers were, Jim Beck, Alan Holt, Jecoa Simmons, Sean McDaniel, Mark Christman, Mike Berard, Steve Bodnaruk, Conrad Cancelmi, Heidi Fleming, Helen Cox,  Joel Tippens, John Maher, Chad Pilster and Rob Wallace.

Team member Sean McDaniel was the overall winner at the Marineland Sprint Triathlon on April 20, 2008. Sean was 3rd out of the water, took over the lead during the bike and maintained it to the finish. Sean was challenged by Plan B Cycling shop owner Steve Bodnaruk who finished in 2nd place, 30 seconds back.

Darren Cox completed IRONMAN ARIZONA in 9:54  on April 13, 2008 and qualified for Kona again. Darren was 4th in his age group, 23rd amateur and 49th overall. The course was windy and hot, 95 degrees and no shade on the run. 360 people dropped out due to heat, the third highest DNF rate in North American Ironman history. Darren will take a short break in training to recover, then back at it for Hawaii.

Daniel Wallace, Naval Expeditionary Guard Battallion, is stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The military staged a triathlon for all service personnel on April 5, 2008. Daniel placed 2nd overall despite riding a mountain bike. The winner was riding a carbon tri bike. The race was a 600 meter swim in the bay, 9 mile bike thru the hills and a 4 mile run. The Navy, Marines, Army, Coast Guard and Air Force made up the over 100 person field.

TEAM HISTORY

In January 2000, the Tigershark Endurance Racing team was formed in an effort to create a platform for training and racing for a small group of friends. There were no dues or rules, no officers or voting for anything, just a group with common interests.

The original members were Rob Wallace, Scotty Dowling, Jecoa Simmons, Scott Petersohn, Tammy Marris, Sean Wallace, Daniel Wallace and Sean McDaniel.

Although the concept remains the same, the team has grown to almost 60 members and is a registered club with USA Triathlon.

With the sudden growth in membership comes the need to become better organized. Businesses in the Volusia County area are stepping forward to provide sponsorship for this team. These sponsorship dollars are being used to offset the costs of team apparel. Members are now able to purchase shirts, hats and racewear at reduced costs thanks to our sponsors.

Newly designed moisture wicking team t-shirts are being printed. The shirts should retail for $25.00 but thanks to our sponsors, they will only cost $18.00 printed. Tri tops are being developed with the help of Plan B Cycling and should be ready before June.
